WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Know your Turkish Airlines flight compensation rights

Flight delayed or cancelled? UK and EU passengers are protected by EC 261 and UK 261 regulations giving you the legal right to claim compensation in most cases.

Covers UK and EU routes. If your Turkish Airlines flight took off from a UK or EU airport or you travelled with an EU airline landing in the UK or EU, you're protected under these passenger rights laws.

What counts as a valid claim? You may be eligible if your flight was delayed by 3 or more hours, cancelled within 14 days of departure, or you were denied boarding. The only exception is disruptions caused by extraordinary circumstances, such as severe weather.

100% risk-free with Air Delayed. We manage your claim from start to finish. You pay nothing unless we win, that's our no win, no fee promise.

YOUR PASSENGER RIGHTS

Turkish Airlines Flight Delay Compensation Rights

If your Turkish Airlines flight arrived at your final destination more than three hours late, you may be entitled to financial compensation under EC Regulation 261/2004 (EC261) or UK Regulation 261 (UK261) depending on where your flight departed from. These passenger rights regulations exist to protect travellers from the disruption and inconvenience caused by significant flight delays, and they apply regardless of whether you travelled in economy or business class, or whether you booked directly or through a travel agent.

To be eligible for delay compensation on a Turkish Airlines flight, the following conditions must be met:

  • Your flight departed from an airport within the European Union, Norway, Iceland, or Switzerland (EC261), or from a UK airport (UK261)
  • You arrived at your final destination three or more hours later than the originally scheduled arrival time
  • The delay was caused by something within Turkish Airlines's control such as a technical fault, crew shortage, or operational issue
  • You held a valid confirmed booking and checked in on time (no later than 45 minutes before the scheduled departure)

It is important to note that compensation is based on your arrival time, not your departure time. A flight that departs late but makes up time in the air and arrives within three hours of schedule does not qualify.

What Assistance Is Turkish Airlines Required to Provide During a Delay?

Regardless of whether you are entitled to financial compensation, Turkish Airlines has a legal duty to look after passengers during significant delays at the airport. Under both EC261 and UK261, the right to care is triggered as follows:

  • Flights up to 1,500 km: meals and refreshments after a delay of 2 hours or more
  • Flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km: meals and refreshments after a delay of 3 hours or more
  • Flights over 3,500 km: meals and refreshments after a delay of 4 hours or more

In all cases, Turkish Airlines must also provide access to two free phone calls, emails, or faxes. If the delay extends overnight, the airline is required to arrange hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and the hotel at no cost to you.

If your Turkish Airlines flight is delayed by more than five hours and you decide you no longer wish to travel, you are entitled to a full refund of your unused ticket. You can still claim delay compensation even if you choose not to board the rerouted or delayed flight.

When Is Turkish Airlines Exempt from Paying Delay Compensation?

Turkish Airlines is not required to pay financial compensation if it can demonstrate that the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances, events that were outside the airline's control and could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. Accepted extraordinary circumstances include severe weather conditions, air traffic control strikes or restrictions, political instability, security threats, and hidden manufacturing defects in the aircraft.

However, the following situations are not considered extraordinary circumstances and do not exempt Turkish Airlines from paying compensation:

  • Technical faults discovered during routine maintenance
  • Crew shortages or internal staff sickness
  • Overbooking or scheduling errors
  • Internal airline strikes

The airline must provide clear evidence that an extraordinary circumstance caused the delay and that it took all reasonable steps to minimise the impact on passengers.

Turkish Airlines Flight Cancellation Rights

Having a Turkish Airlines flight cancelled can be a significant disruption to your travel plans. Whether you are travelling for business or leisure, both EC Regulation 261/2004 (EC261) and UK Regulation 261 (UK261) grant you clear, enforceable rights when Turkish Airlines cancels your flight. These rights include the choice between a full refund or a replacement flight, financial compensation in many circumstances, and practical assistance such as meals and hotel accommodation while you wait.

What Are Your Rights When Turkish Airlines Cancels Your Flight?

Regardless of when or why Turkish Airlines cancels your flight, you are always entitled to choose between:

  • A full refund of the price paid for your unused ticket, returned within 7 days; or
  • Rerouting to your final destination at the earliest available opportunity under comparable transport conditions; or
  • Rerouting at a later date of your choosing, subject to seat availability

If the cancellation means that your outbound flight is now pointless for example, you were on a return journey, you are also entitled to a return flight to your original point of departure.

These rights apply regardless of whether the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances. Turkish Airlines cannot withhold your right to a refund or rebooking, even in cases of severe weather or other events outside its control.

When Is Turkish Airlines Required to Pay Cancellation Compensation?

In addition to a refund or rerouting, you may be entitled to financial compensation depending on how much notice Turkish Airlines gave you before the cancellation:

  • 14 days or more before departure: No cash compensation — refund or rerouting only
  • Between 7 and 14 days before departure: Compensation if rerouted flight departs more than 2 hours earlier or arrives more than 4 hours later than original
  • Less than 7 days before departure: Compensation if rerouted flight departs more than 1 hour earlier or arrives more than 2 hours later than original
  • Less than 14 days & no suitable reroute offered: Full compensation: £220, £350, or £520 depending on distance

If you are rerouted and your revised arrival time is close to the original, Turkish Airlines may only owe 50% of the standard compensation amount. The exact percentage depends on the notice period and how significantly your arrival time differs from the original schedule.

What Care Must Turkish Airlines Provide After a Cancellation?

If Turkish Airlines cancels your flight and you are at the airport or notified on the day of travel, the airline must provide:

  • Meals and refreshments appropriate to the waiting time
  • Two free phone calls, emails, or faxes to allow you to make alternative arrangements
  • Hotel accommodation and airport transfers if an overnight stay becomes necessary
  • Written notification of your rights under EC261 or UK261

These care obligations apply whether or not you are entitled to financial compensation, and whether or not the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances.

When Can Turkish Airlines Avoid Paying Cancellation Compensation?

Turkish Airlines is exempt from paying financial compensation, but not from providing a refund or rerouting, if it can prove one of the following:

  • The cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even with all reasonable measures taken; or
  • You were notified of the cancellation more than 14 days before departure

Turkish Airlines Denied Boarding Compensation Rights

due to overbooking? You're entitled to up to £520 plus a refund or rerouting under EC261 and UK261. Passengers who are involuntarily denied boarding, have strong legal protections, including the right to significant financial compensation and immediate practical assistance. Crucially, unlike flight delays and cancellations, denied boarding due to overbooking carries no extraordinary circumstances defence for the airline,

When Does Denied Boarding Compensation Apply?

You are entitled to denied boarding compensation from Turkish Airlines if all of the following apply:

  • You held a valid, confirmed reservation on the flight
  • You presented yourself at the check-in desk or boarding gate no later than 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time
  • You possessed all required travel documents, including a valid passport, visa, and any health documentation
  • Turkish Airlines denied you boarding involuntarily that is, you did not voluntarily agree to give up your seat

You are not entitled to denied boarding compensation if:

  • You voluntarily surrendered your seat in exchange for benefits offered by Turkish Airlines
  • You were denied boarding for reasons of health, safety, or security
  • You did not have the required travel documentation
  • You checked in late or failed to present at the gate within the required timeframe

What Must Turkish Airlines Do Before Denying Boarding Involuntarily?

Before Turkish Airlines can involuntarily deny boarding to any passenger, the airline is legally required to first ask for volunteers who are willing to give up their seats in exchange for agreed benefits. This process must be conducted openly and transparently.

Volunteers who agree to surrender their seats are entitled to:

  • The agreed benefits negotiated with Turkish Airlines (such as vouchers, upgrades, or future travel credits)
  • A full refund of their unused ticket; or rerouting to their destination at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions

Only if Turkish Airlines cannot find enough volunteers is it permitted to deny boarding to passengers involuntarily. All passengers involuntarily denied boarding must then be offered all compensation and assistance rights in full.

What Assistance Must Turkish Airlines Provide After Denying You Boarding?

In addition to financial compensation, Turkish Airlines must provide immediate practical assistance to all passengers who have been involuntarily denied boarding:

  • Choice of refund or rerouting — a full refund of your ticket at the price paid, or rerouting to your final destination at the earliest opportunity or at a later date of your choice
  • Meals and refreshments appropriate to the waiting time
  • Hotel accommodation and transfers if an overnight stay is required
  • Two free phone calls, emails, or faxes
  • Written notification of your rights

What If Turkish Airlines Places You in a Different Class?

If Turkish Airlines reroutes you in a higher class of travel than your original booking, it may not charge you any additional fee. If you are placed in a lower class, Turkish Airlines must reimburse you a percentage of your ticket price within seven days:

  • 30% reimbursement for flights up to 1,500 km
  • 50% reimbursement for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and all other flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km
  • 75% reimbursement for all other flights over 3,500 km

Right to care

Should your Turkish Airlines flight suffer a significant delay, the airline has a legal duty to look after you whilst you wait. That means providing food and drink appropriate to the waiting time, overnight accommodation where necessary, transfers between the airport and your hotel, and access to means of communication such as phone calls or emails.

The point at which this duty of care kicks in depends on the distance of your flight, as set out under UK 261 and EC 261:

Distance of flightDelay threshold
All flights 1,500 km or under2 hours or more
Internal UK/EU flights over 1,500 km3 hours or more
Non-internal UK/EU flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km3 hours or more
Non-internal UK/EU flights over 3,500 km4 hours or more

If Turkish Airlines fails to provide this support, you may be able to claim back any reasonable out-of-pocket expenses you incurred as a result.

How much can you claim for a disrupted Turkish Airlines flight?

The compensation you are entitled to under EC 261 and UK 261 is not based on what you paid for your ticket — it is fixed according to the distance of your flight. This means every passenger on the same route is entitled to the same amount, regardless of fare class.

The amounts are as follows:

Distance of flightCompensation per person
All flights under 1,500 kmUp to £220
Internal EU flights over 1,500 kmUp to £350
Non-internal EU flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 kmUp to £350
Non-internal EU flights over 3,500 kmUp to £520

Bear in mind that if Turkish Airlines offers you re-routing and you arrive within two to four hours of your originally scheduled time, the airline may be permitted to reduce your compensation by 50%. If your flight was cancelled rather than delayed, the same fixed amounts apply, provided you were given less than 14 days' notice before departure.

Your questions, answered

If your flight arrives at its destination with a delay of more than 3 hours, you could potentially be eligible for compensation and you can make a claim, provided that the airline is responsible for the delay. Additionally, if the delay results in long waiting times at the airport the airline is required to provide you with complimentary drinks and snacks.

Compensation amounts are fixed based on the flight distance: £220 for flights up to 1,500 km, £350 for flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km, and £520 for flights over 3,500 km. These amounts are per passenger and are not related to the ticket price.

We cover all airlines flying in and out of Europe. If your flight was delayed or cancelled and it was your airline's responsibility you could be entitled to compensation of up to £520 under Regulations UK261 or EU261.

Airlines will sometimes contact you directly once we have started the claims process with them. If this does happen, we ask that you contact us and if possible send us the correspondence sent to you, to ensure there are no delays in your claims process. If your claim is successful and the airline pays you directly, we will still be entitled to our fee to cover the costs we have incurred in accordance with our Terms & Conditions.

Air Passenger Rights Regulations also apply to package holidays. If your flight is delayed or cancelled, you may be eligible for compensation under EU261 or UK261, even if you booked through a tour operator. Your rights remain protected regardless of how your trip was arranged.
