Understanding Missed Connection Compensation
Missing a connecting flight can be stressful, but did you know you might be entitled to compensation for the inconvenience? If it's the airline's fault, and you arrive at your final destination over three hours late due to a missed connection, you could claim up to £520 in compensation.
At Air Delayed, we understand how frustrating missed connections can be. That's why we're here to guide you through your rights and how to claim compensation, ensuring you're not left out of pocket.
Are You Eligible to Make a Claim?
Check if you qualify for missed connection compensation with these criteria.
Single Booking:
Your connecting flights were part of a single booking.
Airline's Responsibility:
Your missed connection is due to a delay, cancellation, or denied boarding on your first flight.
Within Airline Control:
The disruption was within the airline's control (e.g., operational issues, not weather, or other extraordinary circumstances).
Covered by Regulations:
Your flight falls under specific regulations like UK261 or EU 261.
Not Your Fault:
Your missed connection wasn't caused by something within your control (for example, arriving too late at the departure gate, or lacking the correct documentation).
Significant Delay:
You arrived at your final destination more than 3 hours late.
How to Check if Your Flights Were on One Booking
Look for a single booking reference or PNR (Passenger Name Record) on your e-ticket or booking confirmation. This single reference indicates that the airline acknowledges all segments of your journey as one continuous itinerary. Additionally, if you booked through a travel agent or a third-party website, you can confirm with them directly.
Compensation Amount
Depending on flight distance and delay length, you could receive between £220 to £520 in compensation:
Short distance up to 1500 km
e.g. London- Edinburgh
£220
Medium distance up to 3500 km
e.g. London- Athens
£350
Long distance from 3500 km
e.g. London – Tokyo
£520
What's Not Covered?
There are some situations where you won't be eligible for compensation:
Extraordinary Circumstances:
The delay was due to extraordinary circumstances (e.g., bad weather, airport issues).
Separate Bookings:
You booked flights separately.
Advance Notice:
The airline informed you of changes 2 weeks in advance.
Minor Delay:
You reached your destination close to the original scheduled time.
Additional Entitlements
Don't forget about your other rights! If you're stuck at the airport waiting for a flight, the airline should take care of you:
Meals and Refreshments:
Meal vouchers and refreshments after a 2 hour delay.
Accommodation:
Accommodation for overnight waits.
Rebooking Options:
Choice between refund or rebooking for cancellations.
Communication Assistance:
Help with phone calls, emails, or other communications.
Tips for a Smooth Compensation Process
Follow these practical tips to make the flight compensation claim process as simple and stress-free as possible. From keeping your documents safe to understanding your rights, these steps can help you secure the compensation you deserve quickly and efficiently.
Act Quickly
Do not delay in starting your compensation claim, as strict time limits may apply. Depending on the country, regulation and legal jurisdiction, you typically have between 1 and 6 years to submit your flight delay or cancellation claim. Acting early helps ensure you do not miss out on the compensation you are entitled to.
Keep Records
Keep your boarding pass and document everything related to your disruption, including any communications you may have with the airline.
Be Informed
Understanding your rights is essential when facing a flight delay. Airlines are required to provide care during the disruption, which includes meals, refreshments and, if necessary, overnight accommodation. These entitlements are protected under EU261 and UK261 regulations.
Hold on to Receipts
Keep your receipts if your disruption costs you extra money.
Remember, knowing your rights is the first step to ensuring you're treated fairly when travel plans go awry. By knowing your rights, you can ensure the airline keeps its end of the deal and compensates you fairly for the inconvenience. Missing a connection doesn't have to ruin your trip!
